Bits

To choose the right size bit for your horse, you need to measure the width of your horse’s mouth. You can do this by using a soft measuring tape from one corner of the mouth to the other, over the lips. Add about a half-inch to the measurement for snaffle bits and a bit less for curb bits to ensure a comfortable fit.

There are many types of horse bits, but the most common can be categorized into two main groups: snaffle bits and curb bits. Snaffle bits work directly on the horse’s mouth without leverage, while curb bits use leverage and act on the mouth, chin, and poll. Within these categories, there are numerous variations based on shape, material, and action.

A comfortable horse will accept the bit by chewing slightly and salivating, indicating relaxation. If the horse is opening its mouth, trying to spit out the bit, or showing signs of discomfort, the bit may not be the right size, style, or shape for your horse.

Snaffle bits are generally used for everyday riding and training due to their direct action and mild effect. Curb bits, with their leverage action, are often used for more refined control in specific disciplines or with horses that require a stronger bit due to their training level or behavior.

Bits should be cleaned after every use to remove saliva, food particles, and dirt. You can wash them with warm water and mild soap, then dry them thoroughly. Regular checks for wear and damage are also important to ensure the safety and comfort of your horse.

When transitioning to a new bit, it’s important to do so gradually. Start by introducing the bit during ground work to allow your horse to get used to the feel. Then, proceed with short riding sessions, closely observing your horse’s reaction and comfort. Adjustments may be necessary depending on the horse’s response.
